For more than 25 years, the Skills Centre in the West Kootenays has been a valuable resource for youth, families, low-income and vulnerable community members to develop their skills and employability. With the purchase of an aging commercial building in 2022, the Skills Centre embarked on an ambitious renovation resulting in one of the most accessible, inclusive and energy-efficient buildings in the city. Now the Centre is using the power of videography to tell its story.
“We saw the opportunity to build a permanent home with room to grow, including extra space for complementary non-profit service providers,” says Morag Carter, Executive Director of the Skills Centre. “We also wanted to make it the greenest, most inclusive and accessible building in Trail.”
The 14-month project is a deep energy retrofit which included upgrading of the building envelope (stucco, insulation, roof, windows and doors), upgrading to LED lighting, shifting from gas to electric heat (including the addition of heat pumps and a heat recovery ventilator system), and installation of a 50kW rooftop solar array. The extensive energy upgrades are expected to result in a minimum 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, 35% savings in electrical costs, and 66% savings in fuel costs.
An Economic Generator for the Community
The dramatic transition through different stages of the work was captured in four short videos created to showcase the project to local businesses, contractors and tradespeople. The videos also show the financial and environmental value of upgrading aging buildings to encourage local businesses to undertake this type of work.
The video component of the project required hiring a videographer which was supported through a grant from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC) through its Innovating & Advancing Key Sectors funding stream. “This project has two benefits. It helps build capacity for contractors to undertake deep energy retrofit projects which is critical to enhancing the region’s climate response and improving livability for local communities. It also supports the capacity of one of the business support organizations in the region to better serve its clients.” says Laurel Douglas, CEO of ETSI-BC.
The Skills Centre worked with the Community Energy Association (CEA) who is experienced at marketing, outreach, engagement and video production to develop the video content. The Skills Centre also partnered with the Lower Columbia Community Development Team Society (LCCDTS) and the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce to share the videos through their networks and the business community.
One video focuses on the building’s energy retrofits and technology such as heat pumps and solar panels. Another highlights accessibility features such as the elevator, parking, bathrooms and workstations which helped the Skills Centre achieve access certification through the Rick Hansen Foundation. The third video focuses on career opportunities in the local trades.
Local Trades Capacity Highlighted
Several businesses directly benefitted from the video project. Two large construction companies – Hil-tech Contracting Limited and Martech Electrical – talked about their capacity to work on green projects and gained profile as local firms with this expertise. Bohdan Doval Digital Media and the Community Energy Association benefitted from the new work experience and increased contacts in the region. The video also highlighted the fact that the majority of money spent on the project went to local contractors.
The videos are a resource that the Skills Centre and local businesses can use for several years. The Skills Centre has already added clips to its website and posted them on YouTube to better reach its online audience. Clips will also be used in advertising campaigns for the Skills Centre’s training programs that appear in local venues such as movie theatres and hockey arenas, and as a tool for media relations training for Skills Centre staff.
“The completed renovation exceeded our highest expectations, and the videos are a big part of that,” says Carter. “We have a welcoming, state-of-the art environment to better serve our clients. Engagement around green technologies has increased significantly and by sharing our story, we expect to inspire more commercial retrofits in the region.”
